Dis Gyrl’s Private Passions: Joyce Trotman and Her Autobiography

By Elinor Smallman. As reported in the Friend magazine, 29 May 2026.

The Eye [a column in the Friend] was delighted to hear Friend and author Joyce Trotman interviewed in a recent episode of the BBC’s ‘Private Passions’ about her autobiography, Dis Girl.

Soon to turn ninety-nine, Joyce delves into the story of her life, bringing her time in British Guiana and England to life with musical selections including hymns, Handel played by a steel band, classical and operatic pieces, as well as treating listeners to a few snippets of song in her own voice.

Available until 8 June, Friends can listen to the full episode at: https://bit.ly/JoycePrivatePassions.

[What is truly amazing is Joyce’s amazing memory. She seems to remember every single detail of her life and can recite, endlessly, and without hesitation, hundreds of poems and songs learnt in her childhood and early years.
